One helping of determination, with a side of courage please

The Boks will take on the number 1 rugby nation in the world in their backyard this weekend. With a less than full strength team. What can we gain from this match?

Rugby supporters all over South Africa are hurting from Saturday's loss to those guys we love to hate, the bloody Aussies. This coming Saturday we can expect the same result, but as supporters we would really like to see some more determination in our team.

On Saturday we saw a team with no combinations take on a full-strength Aussie side, and they took a good beating. There are a few players whose international credentials are being questioned, but for the most part I think we just didn't have that dogged determination that we are known for.

What I would like to see this inexperienced team show, is some some real South African never-say-die attitude. Look, I am not going to state that losting by 20 points could ever be lekker, but seeing such a lacklustre performance makes it a whole lot worse.

If the Boks can give it their all, and maybe deal out some bruises to the All Blacks, such a loss would be plenty easier to swallow.

I am hoping that our setpieces will improve, with our front row at least having some game time behind them. They are up against a formidable  All Black front row consisting of Ben Franks, Andrew Hore and Wyatt Crockett which is rated much more highly than the Aussie front row we came up short against. This will be a big ask for our two young props, but they will certainly not be lacking motivation. Both Kruger and Greyling know that their World Cup chances are on the line, and that is the kind of grim determination I would like to see throughout the team.

In the lineouts I would expect things to go smoother, with Smit, Hargreaves and Mostert having played together a fair bit at the Sharks. I think our loose trio has a better balance to it, although we might be lacking some speed. (For those crucifying Stegmann after last week, I just have to mention he did make the most tackles, and cleaned the most rucks against the Aussies.)

I am excited to see Patrick Lambie at fullback, he is more of a classic fullback than Aplon, who I still favour on the wing. It will also be  interesting to see how Juan de Jongh fares in the place of Wynand Olivier. A big, big step up is expected from Ruan Pienaar and Morne Steyn, who were both dreadful against the Australians.

I love the Boks, and there is no way that I can see a final result of an All Black victory by anything less than 15. So for me, I would just like to see our guys go out there, and play as if it is their last game. I would rather be questioning their tactics, and team selection, than their commitment after the game.

GO the Boks!!
