It's On

Colossal, epic, sensational – these are just a few words that have been used to describe the brutal battle between the Wallabies and the Springboks this Sunday. This is poetry in motion. The Tri-Nations Champions against the defending World Cup Champions. You could not ask for a greater contest.
Rugby pumps through the veins of both of these proud nations. Their passion and flare for the game can be felt an ocean away. This may be the business end of the competition but the real action starts here. One point- that’s all you need. As long as you’re ahead after the final whistle, you’re one step closer to the ultimate prize, one step closer to glory.
Both teams are unfortunately troubled with injuries. Losing Frans Steyn and Bakkies Botha right before the quarter final is less than ideal. They are magnificent players and their physicality will definitely be missed. Nevertheless the show must go on. The Boks welcome back Jean de Villiers and Danie Rosouw has been amazing fulfilling every role we’ve asked him to.
There are many other stars who have been tremendous and essential to the Springboks’ success thus far. The likes of Schalk Burger, Pat Lambie and Heinrich Brussouw have been instrumental in South Africa’s campaign. Burger and Brussouw have proved time and time again why they are widely regarded as the best loose forwards in world rugby. Their incredible ability to bend the rules at the break down and their fearless defence will be a great asset to the Boks on Sunday.
Australia have often bragged about their young talent (and I
may be slightly biased) but I have to say that Pat Lambie and Francois Hougaard
are the youngsters to watch. They have already showcased their shining talent
and their undeniable flare could see the Boks come out on top this weekend.
Hougaard will be a burst of energy and creativity and if Peter de Villiers brings him on at the right time, Hougaard will be the Wallabies’ worst nightmare. He’s not a stranger to scoring tries and much like Gio Aplon, despite his stature he has no problem taking down the bigger players.
I still remain slightly sceptical of de Villiers’ decision to include John Smit in the starting XV. We have many leaders within the squad who have earned their places in the starting line up. Victor Matfield has often captained the Springboks to success and has lead the Bulls to multiple Super Rugby titles. It also goes without saying, Bismark du Plessis is a better player and we need is physicality and precision.
My selection gripes aside, Sunday is going to be intense. Australia are going to hit us with everything they have. Can we do it? Of course we can! We have the experience and we have the talent to knock the Aussies out. With a bit of luck, Sunday could see the Springboks take one step closer to becoming the team in history to win the World Cup back to back... now wouldn’t that be something!
