Diary 1: October 10

Posted on Tuesday, 11 October 2011 (7:10 am)

I was absolutely stunned to hear that Vodacom listened to my show. The fact that they then offered to fly me to New Zealand to watch four IRB Rugby World Cup games live, left me speechless which was unfortunate considering I was on live on air at the time!

It was a weekend of mixed emotions – I mean at one moment I was absolutely on top of the world with the knowledge that I was about to make my dream come true and the next, I was deflated and inconsolable when I watched the Springboks agonising defeat to the Wallabies.

As the saying goes, “c’est la vie” and I know that this opportunity means the world not just to myself but also to the 10 Shosholoza Bokke winners. Rest assured that we will still bring the roof down during our stay– we will continue to sing Shosholoza with pride at the top of our lungs and at all possible times!

I read in Herschelle Gibbs’ book, “To the Point”, that New Zealand isn’t renowned for their beautiful women... guess I will have to see for myself. More importantly, will be the opportunity to see the “Haka” up close: I have no doubt that I will be truly terrified, and if it were left to me, I would give them the ball at every opportunity! I look forward to interacting with the locals, seeing as much of the country as I can and trying out a variety of local delicassies and beverages.

As soon as I check in at the airport, my dream will start becoming a reality as I embark on a journey with Springbok fanatics to a country I’ve never visited before to witness firsthand, the top four remaining teams of the World Cup. Life simply doesn’t get any better than that. To shorten the long flight I will bring with me my iPod and camera and in the case of missing home, I will have a number of photos of family and friends.

Our proud South African spirit will resonate in New Zealand and while we may not return home winners, we will definitely hold our heads up high knowing that our boys gave it their all. Shosholoza Bokke!

Thanks to Vodacom for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity and well done to them for doing their part in getting behind the Springboks in 2011.
