Springboks face first Test of the year against Wales

With the Super 14 coming to a conclusion our Bokke can now have a chance to shine, and they will be kicking off the Test season with a game against Wales in Cardiff this weekend. Despite being limited by the Super 14 finals, the selectors still chose a team with quite a few of the Bulls and Stormers players who did their thing in the final, and luckily all of them have been deemed fit to play, despite some minor concerns about Andries Bekker’s foot and Juan de Jongh’s thigh.

Jannie predicts an excellent year for our national side, which includes not only a lot of the Bulls and Stormers players who helped drive their teams to success in the past Super season, but some of our best players currently based abroad, as well as quite a few Cheetahs and Sharks players who will be wanting a chance to kick some after their team’s poor form over the Super season.

For the coming match against Wales, there are two new caps in the starting line-up, in the form of Stormers wing Gio Aplon and flanker Francois Louw, as well as Cheetahs wing Bjorn Basson on the bench, acknowledging his good performance in the Super. There are also six overseas-based players in the starting 15: Frans Steyn, Jean de Villiers, Butch James, Joe van Niekerk, BJ Botha and CJ van der Linde.

This is very much a new team and coach Peter de Villiers doesn’t have too much time to get them ready, and we’re facing a strong Welsh team. But I do think we’ll win, and without many problems either, with our team set to be confident and geared for a triumph after South Africa’s success in last week’s the Super.

Saturdays vibe in Soweto.

Check out this video clip that I captured on Saturday before the game down Vilikazi street. Awesome stuff. What the Bulls did in bringing the semi, and the final to Orlando could not have been achieved by a million politicians. Well done Bulle! Here's the youtube link:

Will Australia crumble?

After last weeks thrilling victory over the Aussies in the Vodacom Tri-Nations, South Africa notched up their first points of the competition. To me though, the points were not the only thing we took from the Aussies. We took a massive chunk out of their confidence.

Francois Hougaard’s Mullet

Definition: Business up front, party in the back!

There are stories in the Bible about Samson’s hair giving him superhuman strength, well, could our new scrum half be our very own Samson? This is a post about the (in)famous mullet currently making a name for itself on Francois Hougaard’s pip.

Elton, M-PESA, Boerie & my Bokke jock-strap

So we were running low on the boerie supplies, I was running low on cash supplies, Elton was being lazy (as always) so he sends me money from cell phone to cell phone via Vodacom M-PESA (http://bit.ly/dDl33b). Check out the video explaining it all.

Oh and by the way, what do you guys think of our Haka? Pretty cool huh?

Victor Matfield: A living legend!

So we all know that a lot of the hype around tomorrow’s game at Loftus is focused around Victor Matfield earning his 100th cap for the Bokke. He will join only Percy Montgomery and John Smit (he reached his last weekend at FNB stadium) in reaching this milestone for South Africa. What’s his story though? Here is a short piece on the background of Big Vic, a true living legend.

SA's world record attempt on track

South Africa's youngest Guinness World Record attempt, to fly 90 000 South African flags in one venue at one time, is on track thanks to a capacity crowd at the Springbok-All Blacks Tri-Nations clash on 21 August at FNB Stadium in Soweto. The Keep Flying initiative - together with initiator Draftfcb SA; Vodacom; the International Marketing Council of SA; Lead SA; and SuperSport - had lodged the attempt with Guinness World Records. They must now supply photographic proof, which Guinness will audit before making its pronouncement.
