Bokke: The come-back kings of Cardiff
While base jumpers did their thing in the background, the Boks earned themselves a narrow victory in their first test of the season, managing a respectable 34 – 31 against Wales, not bad if you take into account that we were away (at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff) and had a less than spectacular team, with many key players resting after the Super 14.
The match had strange guest stars, like an a 100-member Welsh choir and a billy goat too! I reckon Wales is a pretty strange place! Anyways, skipper John Smit was unimpressed, calling the win “ordinary”, but I skeem if you take into account the youth of some of the players and the fact that there was little time to prepare, he’s maybe being a bit harsh.
Truth be told things did look very bad in the first quarter, where Wales managed a 16 – 3 lead, no thanks to Smit himself, whose long pass was intercepted by Welsh centre James Wood, allowing them to forge further ahead. But our bokke fought back, taking control, and the Welsh responded by losing their form completely, allowing us to eventually take the lead.
Daniel Roussouw was a definite man of the match, and Dewald Potgieter, who received the ball from Roussow to score the game’s second try, was also on point throughout. Newcomer Juan de Jongh proved he’s ready to bring it for the bokke, by managing a great and relaxed try.
Whatever Smit has to say, a win is a win and I think it’s a pretty lekker start to the season despite a swak start to the match. Let’s see if we can continue to klap it when we face France this coming weekend at Newlands. A bit of a shocker is that Frans Steyn has been dropped from the squad. We will have to wait and see if this is a good decision…

Will Australia crumble?
After last weeks thrilling victory over the Aussies in the Vodacom Tri-Nations, South Africa notched up their first points of the competition. To me though, the points were not the only thing we took from the Aussies. We took a massive chunk out of their confidence.
Francois Hougaard’s Mullet
Definition: Business up front, party in the back!
There are stories in the Bible about Samson’s hair giving him superhuman strength, well, could our new scrum half be our very own Samson? This is a post about the (in)famous mullet currently making a name for itself on Francois Hougaard’s pip.
Elton, M-PESA, Boerie & my Bokke jock-strap
So we were running low on the boerie supplies, I was running low on cash supplies, Elton was being lazy (as always) so he sends me money from cell phone to cell phone via Vodacom M-PESA (http://bit.ly/dDl33b). Check out the video explaining it all.
Oh and by the way, what do you guys think of our Haka? Pretty cool huh?
Victor Matfield: A living legend!
So we all know that a lot of the hype around tomorrow’s game at Loftus is focused around Victor Matfield earning his 100th cap for the Bokke. He will join only Percy Montgomery and John Smit (he reached his last weekend at FNB stadium) in reaching this milestone for South Africa. What’s his story though? Here is a short piece on the background of Big Vic, a true living legend.
SA's world record attempt on track
South Africa's youngest Guinness World Record attempt, to fly 90 000 South African flags in one venue at one time, is on track thanks to a capacity crowd at the Springbok-All Blacks Tri-Nations clash on 21 August at FNB Stadium in Soweto. The Keep Flying initiative - together with initiator Draftfcb SA; Vodacom; the International Marketing Council of SA; Lead SA; and SuperSport - had lodged the attempt with Guinness World Records. They must now supply photographic proof, which Guinness will audit before making its pronouncement.

Thanks for that Byron
Hi Byron, we will have to agree to disagree. Thanks for the intelligent comment about the All Blacks (GO THE ALL BLACKS, etc), but here at Player 23 we are proudly South African and are 100 percent behind the bokke :)
